He saw babies being hatched in test tubes, invented a Prozac-like happy drug called Soma and envisioned the mass media as a form of social conditioning. So much of his forecast has already come true.
BRAVE NEW WORLD MOVIE DELTA FREE
It is a terrific challenge, of course, to adapt Huxley's vision of a technocratic future, without free will or individualism. This tame ''Brave New World'' assumes a self-congratulatory tone for having tackled the subject at all, but the results are curiously flat. The first image represents the barely glimpsed lost potential of the movie, while the second, unintentionally silly one captures the essence of this muddle-headed film, which takes Aldous Huxley's scabrous 1932 novel and makes it safe for network television. The second scariest element - and it's a close second - is the sight of Leonard Nimoy, one of the world's Controllers, as host of a party wearing a Day-Glo orange suit: Nehru jacket, ankle-length skirt and big matching plastic beads. Filled with quick-cut images of athletic bodies, hard rock music and phrases flashed across the screen (''History is bunk'' and ''I'm happy I'm a Delta'') it is indistinguishable from any number of shoe or sports drink commercials likely to crop up during breaks in this television film. The scariest moment in this adaptation of ''Brave New World'' comes when a disgruntled factory worker from the none-too-bright Delta caste is shown a video to recondition him into happiness.
